MUN conference held in-person after two years!
Seven of our pupils have participated in an MUN Conference held over the 8th-9th October weekend. The event was held at Campion School and our school was selected to represent the delegates of France throughout the conference.
This was the first Conference held in-person after two years of online Conferences due to Covid-19 measures. And although our MUN Club members participated with dedication and enjoyed the online Conferences, there is no comparison to the atmosphere, the interaction, the friendships and the bonds made during a live, in-person Model United Nations conference. Their smiles over the two days of the event said it all! As teachers we are very proud of our young generation of future leaders of the world and congratulate all those who participated.
Additionally, Lydia Marie Stephenson was voted the Best Delegate in the Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee while Kimberly Wang was voted Best Delegate of ECOSOC, the Economic and Social Council.
Further MUN Conferences are scheduled for later in the school year and our pupils are already looking ahead to those. All senior school pupils are invited to get involved and should see Ms Kladouchou or Ms Tsirigoti for further information.
Disco Time!
On Friday 8th April, we held our first junior school disco in a long time and boy oh boy, did the children have a blast! In the plush surroundings of the new venue next door to our school campus, Cataleya, our years 5 & 6 pupils danced, sang and laughed their way through an evening of fun. The dance offs always provide a competitive element of excitement to the proceedings so there's a bit of everything for everyone. Disco time is back in town!
Christmas is for Giving
As we are all very aware, Christmas is a time of giving, and we are incredibly touched by the generosity of our families and the willingness of our pupils to help with charitable causes this Christmas season. For one, the Junior School Charity Ninjas have worked together with the Senior School Services Society to gather Christmas gifts for needy refugee children in Athens, and our wonderful Shoebox campaign enabled us to give hundreds of gift boxes to Ark of the World Metadrasi, Faros and the Soup Kitchen in Anavyssos which has been long supported by SLC.
Furthermore, the charity Floga (Φλόγα), the Panhellenic Association of Parents of Children with Cancer, has been supported with a large donation as our pupils hosted a holiday sale with their items. This charity represents and supports thousands of families all over Greece and fights for better medical, psychological and social care of children suffering from cancer.
We also supported Make A Wish Greece by having our pupils make a donation and write their heartfelt wishes on a star that we then hung on our branches of kindness. This well-known charity is one of the charities we donate to annually and has expressed its appreciation over the years.
Another charitable effort was held with a Festive Jumper Day to raise money, as well as a raffle that offered a lusciously full gift basket brimming with all kinds of goodies as the prize. Both were successful enough for us to make a sizeable donation to Doctors of the World Medecins du Monde and Ark of the World.
We thank all our generous, kind families for their efforts to help others through our combined efforts. Community is everything, as we certainly can see.
Understanding our Children
Managing your child’s fears and worries can be a challenge at the best of times and we all require a little extra help. On Thursday, 30th September, we hosted a unique event at the Efilena Estate (next door to our campus) in order to explore issues that concern our families and how to recognise their significance. The first part of the workshop was a tremendous success and is sure to encourage participation at the follow-up session in the same venue.
Our school counsellor, Ms Stefania Zarri, a qualified and experienced psychologist, gave parents the opportunity to listen to the science behind the subject, express themselves and share their experiences too in a friendly atmosphere of mutual care and concern. We warmly invite all parents to join us for the next workshop on 4th November, and look forward to enjoying a light brunch in the delightful surroundings of the estate immediately afterwards.

M. U. N. online!
During the weekend of Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of October 2020, 13 pupils of our school, from Year 8 to Year 13, took part in a “different” online MUN Conference organised by Campion School under the guidance of Ms Kladouchou and Ms Tsirigoti.
It was their first experience of an online public speaking event and for some even their first experience of an MUN Conference. Yet, both the old and the new members of our school’s MUN Club enjoyed the experience enormously. Two of our oldest pupils were Presidents of WHO (World Health Organisation) and ICC (International Criminal Court) respectively and made themselves and the school very proud with the calm and effective guidance they provided to all delegates of their committees. Three of our younger pupils, two of whom took part for their very first time, were voted ‘Best Delegate’ or were awarded an ‘honourable mention’ for their successful preparation and impressive presence in their committees, the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council), the WHO and the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee respectively.
We all feel very proud of them, not only because they sacrificed their whole weekend for this participation but also because they did show that extracurricular activities can be performed and enjoyed even during these unprecedented times. Well done to all participants and good luck with their preparation for the next MUN Conference, the DSAMUN!
Basketball Fans!
On Thursday 20th February 2020, the PE department organised a huge friendly tournament here at St Lawrence College with several other international schools. Years 5 & 6 played mini basketball matches against players from Byron College, Campion School, DES Elementary and St Catherine's School. In excess of 220 children played for all their worth - their hearts were set on victory even if the scores weren't being tallied up officially. What a fun event it was!
On-The-Spot
The ‘On-The-Spot’ Painting and Drawing Competition took place last weekend at Campion School and it was a lovely event that saw a number of international schools from the Attica area take part. Contestant’s ages ranged from 5-16 years.
The following five pupils from St. Lawrence College took part:
Alexandra Mavromichalis (Year 7)
Dorothea Svistunova ( Year 8)
Chen Yunhan (Emily) (Year 9 )
Yang Xueying (Rose) (Year 9)
Elene Lomtatidze (Year 10)
It was an exciting morning for our pupils, there was a lot of energy and artistic passion shown. They had worked very hard to prepare their ideas on the theme of ‘Nature’ in the weeks prior to the competition. We wish them the best of luck for the judging, but most importantly congratulate them all for taking the time to participate in this worthy event. A special thanks to Ms. Poulimenakos and Ms. Delikoura for accompanying and supporting the pupils. Congratulations too to Dorothea and Emily who came runner up in their age group!
University Preparation Gets Underway
As school gets into full swing once again, the thoughts of our Year 12 and Year 13 pupils have begun to turn towards the future and life after St. Lawrence College. With university application deadlines looming, Year 13 pupils have been working closely with their form tutors who offer guidance on all aspects of the application process. Our A-Level pupils have also been given the opportunity to ask questions directly of representatives from UK universities, such as Imperial and King’s College, who have visited the school over the last few weeks to talk about specific information relating to their university but also about campus life in general. As well as that, we were delighted to host diplomats from the Irish embassy who came to tell our pupils more about studying in Ireland; a destination that will undoubtedly increase in popularity in the next few years as the reputation of its excellent universities continues to grow.
Services Society
One more project undertaken by the St. Lawrence College Services Society this year was a quite feminine one! After the great success of the Shoebox Campaign coordinated by the Services Society at Christmas, a warm relationship has been established between the pupils of our school and the children of the FAROS charity organisation in the centre of Athens.
Before Easter the FAROS organisation opened a day centre for young women and girls, called ‘Horizon Girls’, with the aim to help unaccompanied refugee girls and young women getting back their confidence and aiming for a better life. In their centre, the girls have started learning Greek, English, the use of computers and knitting and sewing.
The Services Society, through a non-uniform day, managed to raise enough money for the purchase of three sewing machines which together with a lot of knitting and sewing material was donated to the FAROS educational and recreational centre for refugee teenage girls and young women, who were reportedly very excited and happy to receive these donations. A big thank you to all pupils, parents and teachers who helped once again so eminently and efficiently.
Mini Basketball Fun!
On Friday 1st February 2019, a grand total of 201 pupils from St Lawrence, ACS, DES, Campion, Byron and St Catherine's participated in a fantastic inter-schools friendly here at St Lawrence. The children aged ten and eleven, battled it out with a smile and a barely hidden competitive edge! Well done to all who played; we look forward to the next round wherever it may be held!
Basketball Success
On Friday 1st February, the St Lawrence College year 7 & 8 boys and girls basketball teams took part in a tournament at Campion school. 5 international school participated in the boys tournament and 3 in the girls. After what was an incredible show of skill and determination, St Lawrence finished 1st place in both tournaments.
Congratulations to all!
St Lawrence Head to Scotland
A Universities Tour in Scotland was organised for Sixth Form pupils this January. The trip took place between 23 - 26 January and included visits to five Scottish universities: the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, the Heriot-Watt University and the University of St. Andrews. In all universities, the visits included an information talk on the higher education system and the admissions process, and a campus tour by student ambassadors. Apart from the universities the pupils experienced city tours in the Edinburgh, Glasgow and St. Andrews, they visited the Edinburgh Castle, the Mary Kings Close, the Castle and the Cathedral of St. Andrews, and they attended 'War Horse', a National Theatre performance. Finally, they had a city tour in Munich on their way back.
First Model United Nations Event of the Year a Success!
Over the weekend 6-7th October eleven St. Lawrence College pupils from our school participated in the Campion School Model United Nations.
The pupils, who ranged from Year 7 to Year 12, acted as delegates of Ethiopia and Mexico across various committees. Two of our older pupils held chairing positions in their committees, a great honour for Andreas Hagis and Joanna Sakkadas that comes as a recognition of their dedication and hard work in various past MUNs. For the first time ever, two pupils from Year 7 took part in the MUN, with one of them managing, through his enthusiasm and dedicated work, to gain the Best Delegate Award in his Junior Group Discussion Committee - congratulations to Constantine Zafeirakis!
Model United Nations has some fanatic supporters in our school who enjoy participating in these conferences, dedicating much of their free time, both at school and at home, towards preparing for them. Taking part in an MUN Conference is a rewarding and educational experience with participants making new friends from all over the world, and not only learning about current world affairs but also proposing solutions to many of them. All the members of the MUN Club of our school, old and new, are now looking forward with great excitement to their next event, which is scheduled for December 2018!
