Reach for the Sky, or Don't Even Try!

On Friday 10th February 2017, St Lawrence College hosted a mini-basketball tournament for the Year 5 and 6 pupils of our school, as well as our fellow international schools of Athens: Byron, Campion and St Catherine’s.

The atmosphere was electrically charged as the children shouted their support, chanted for their school and yelled with delight as their friends on court scored points. This was a 'friendly' thus no official scores were kept but the players were keeping their own scores and enjoyed every moment of the competition!

By the time everyone had completed their rounds of 3 or 4 games against other schools, the children were worn out from all the excitement! And boy, are they looking forward to our next meet! Well done to the PE department for organising such a fun-filled activity!

As always, we are extremely proud, and will see them on the courts again soon.

Headmaster’s welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the website of St. Lawrence College, the British school in Greece. I am confident that the information and the imagery in these pages will give you a powerful indication of the warmth and happiness and above all the learning that takes place across the entire community of this wonderful school.

St. Lawrence College offers a British education to children ages 3-18, in a modern purpose-built campus set in more than 20 acres of glorious countryside in southern Athens. The school’s stunning location provides the ideal setting for unpressurised learning. It is served by an excellent communications network that provides easy access to pupils based across the entire Athens-Piraeus conurbation. In this peaceful rural setting, complete with first-class resources and facilities, children can develop their study skills and achieve lasting and meaningful learning.

They become citizens of the world, fully equipped to recognise and respect diversity...

The education our pupils receive is based upon the English National Curriculum and British educational values throughout, from pre-school through junior school (Key Stage 1 & 2) and senior school (Key Stages 3-5), with IGCSEs being taken at the end of Year 11 and AS & A-Levels in Years 12 and 13. UK universities are the most popular destination for higher education for our school leavers, with enrolment in colleges and universities across the EU, the USA and elsewhere in the world also popular

Under the guidance of an outstanding body of teachers, our pupils succeed in reaching far more than their academic potential alone. They become citizens of the world, fully equipped to recognise and respect diversity, either in their immediate society or within the global environment; to appreciate and utilise the opportunities provided for them, and to understand the value of being an active and considerate member of their community. They forge bonds of friendship within an inclusive environment of pupils from more than fifty nationality backgrounds.

A website can only go so far. The best way to fully appreciate the atmosphere of happy and safe development that children live and breathe at our school is to experience it for yourself. Therefore, should you wish to visit St. Lawrence College and observe first-hand the quality of learning that happens in our stunning educational environment, it would be our pleasure to welcome you at our premises and show you face-to-face just what makes St. Lawrence College special.

Model United Nations PARTICIPATION SUCCESS FOR ST LAWRENCE COLLEGE PUPILS

During the long weekend of Friday 14th to Sunday 16th December 2018, sixteen pupils of our school from Year 7 up to Year 13 took part in the 13th Costeas-Geitonas School Model United Nations (CGSMUN). Our pupils represented Germany and United Arab Emirates in various committees, such as the Disarmament and International Security Committee, the Economic and Financial Committee, the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, the Special Political and Decolonization Committee, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Human Rights Council (HRC), the Environmental Commission (EC), the Special Conference on “Global Health Inequalities” (SPECON) and the International Court of Justice.

The pupils debated and proposed resolutions to international matters as diverse as Strengthening of security and cooperation in the Mediterranean (especially in the Middle East and Northern Africa), Reform of the IMF and the World Bank, Preservation of endangered languages and dialects, Ensuring access to water and sanitation for all, Challenges to successful implementation of HIV and AIDS-related health policies, Promotion of vaccination to interrupt community-wide outbreaks, Youth mental health in the digital era, Ensuring access to education in refugee camps, Towards a green transportation infrastructure,  The impact of climate change, desertification and land degradation on global health or the Application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

On this occasion, not only did two of our pupils act as Committee chairs, the Disarmament and International Security and the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committees respectively, but a Year 12 pupil was a Judge in the International Court of Justice and was voted the best Judge. Our participant in Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), representing Germany, was also voted the best delegate of the Committee. Both awards are given to participants for their hard work and preparation as well as their excellent presentation and contribution during the three days of the Conference. This year Ms Evangelia Tzironi, a lawyer and asylum expert, who works in the UN Refugee Agency in Athens, visited our school and addressed the members of the M.U.N. Club who had the opportunity to engage in interesting discussions with her as part of their preparation for the Conference. Her help was greatly appreciated and we are all looking forward to her visiting us again to provide our pupils with more insight into the work of the United Nations. And as always all old members of the M.U.N. Club as well as any interested new pupils are welcome to join our next participation in April 2019.

An Insπring Week!

During our March half-term, a special day was celebrated around the world on the 14th of March, the International Pi-Day!  Pi is a mathematical constant having the value 3.14….. (that is the connection to the specific day of March) and is represented by the Greek letter “π”. It is the symbol used in Mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter and it is one of the defining constants of our Universe.

Pupils and teachers celebrated Pi-Day the week after half-term with several events.

Pupils

·         measured the circumference of circles and, using hands-on activities, found the relationship with the diameter

·         investigated different relationships between angles in circles as well as areas of squares inscribed in circles

·         and passionately participated in several competitions.

Well done to all the pupils that took part in those competitions and here are winning pupils!

·         Haijie Su (Year 8) who won the competition of pi recitation by reciting the amazing number of 124 digits of π!

·          Delfin Saygi (Year 9) who won the competition of writing the most words beginning with pi in ten minutes, she managed to write 50 different words!

·         Dimitris Thodis (Year 10) who won the competition of inventing the most interesting word using π “rib-π-steak”

All the events were well enjoyed by both pupils and teachers. The celebrations ended with a very successful pie-sale. We, in our department, are very grateful to all pupils and parents who contributed generously to this unique pie-sale. We are happy to inform you that an amount of 410 euros was collected! All the money will be donated, through the Services Society, to charity and more specifically to the children in the Eleonas Refugee Camp.

It was a really insπring week!
