No Finish Line 2018

On Thursday 26th and Friday 27th April 2018, 413 pupils, staff members and parents from St Lawrence College made a fantastic contribution to the world-famous charity sporting event known as No Finish Line. The Senior School took its turn first as they ran the circuit at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on Athens' southern coast. They were followed by the Junior School taking its turn the next day and with even more participants, they exceeded the impressive number of km run on Thursday. In total, St Lawrence College ran an astounding 2997km and in fact won the Champions' Trophy for the greatest overall distance of any of the eleven participating schools as well as 3rd place overall from all organisations who took part! The highest individual distances were the 32 km run by Mr Dimitris Karakostas and 22 km from an 11 year old pupil with a lot of energy, stamina and determination: Konstantinos Chachamopoulos!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in putting both charity and fitness at the top of their priority lists - a winning combination I can tell you!

An Evening of Entertainment

On Thursday 26th April 2018, a wonderful evening of entertainment was held at the school. Children from both the Junior and Senior schools returned for an event in which they showed off a marvellous array of talents and skills that they have been working at for some time in preparation for the show. There were young dancers from our Junior Dance and Movement Club; Ms Tsirigoti's Senior and Year 6 Greek Dance Clubs; pupils in the Senior Drama Club; our choir, the St Lawrence Singers; as well as a wide range of musicians who receive tuition at school on instruments ranging from the piano, the violin, the guitar and drums too.

The audience was delighted to view such a fine combination of pieces: both dramatic and musical, both traditional and modern. Congratulations are in order to all who took part, pupils and staff, as their efforts resulted in a successful evening all round. Well done to all!

Run, Run, As Fast As You Can!

On Wednesday 25th April, the whole of the Junior school spent an enjoyable morning on the field for the competitive running events between Macedonia, Epirus and Attica, our three houses. The children ran girls' and boys' heats to qualify, then the top three of each took part in the final. The relay races were also nail-biting affairs as the children bolted around the track with a baton firmly in their grip!

We eagerly awaited the next stage in the sporting calendar - the Circuits Sports Days, which were held on 16th and 17th May! Over 2 days our energetic, skillful pupils in key stages 1 and 2 gave their all in the name of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Years 4, 5 and 6 even managed to pull of amazing tug-of-war matches which really tested their mettle. Fantastic results all round!

We await the high jump finals on 1st June. Watch this space!

Forensics News

The SLC Forensics team once again participated in this year’s Panhellenic Forensics Tournament which was held at ACS on the 8th – 11th March, competing against 19 other schools from different parts of Greece.

After many practices on Saturdays, the team made the school proud with an impressive number of finalists: 2 in the Oral Interpretation of Literature category (1 Dramatic, 1 Comic) and 3 in the Duet Acting Category (1 Dramatic, 2 Comic), which made it 5 in all, and 2 Honourable Mentions. The Debaters were also very successful in reaching the Semi Finals. Overall, this gave the team the 4th place.

Many thanks to all the coaches who helped: the Head Coach, Ms Stafford; the Debate Coach Mr Courts; Ms Grivas, Ms Iliadou, Ms Kladouchou, Ms Kouvari and our own SLC graduate Eirini Geleklidis. Congratulations to all the participants for representing the school so successfully.

Planet Physics - Sounds Like a Good Idea!

On Tuesday 27th March, Year 4 wrapped up their 'Sound' topic in science with a trip to Athens' very own science museum - Planet physics. They were shown around by very informative guides who showed and taught them about how sound is produced, transmitted and even seen via sound waves. In addition, pupils had many hands-on experiences where they produced and played with radio frequency waves using a Theremin machine.

Another fun aspect of their experience was listening to the guide's demonstration of how to change their voice. Using helium gas, he squeaked like a chipmunk and with sulfur hexafluoride gas he gave a pretty good imitation of the gravelly-voiced Darth Vader! Most amusing and quite impressive; the children were tickled pink!

Scientists in Action

Following on from our hugely successful science fair a few week's ago, all the children have been eagerly participating in class investigations with great gusto. Here's year 3 working outdoors on an investigation of forces. They looked at creating a fair test which used particular variables - some groups tested various ramp surfaces for friction, while others varied the height of the same ramp to see how far their objects rolled. Distances were compared and scientific conclusions discussed. Excellent job!

Gymnastics from the start!

On Wednesday 28th March the Reception and Early Years pupils held their eagerly awaited show of agility and courage at our Annual Gym Display. They treated parents and family members to a super show of impressive dance moves and grooves which really got the audience smiling and clapping along. This was followed by a demonstration of physical coordination skills. The audience was most impressed by their children's understanding of sequences and routes through guided activities as they enjoyed showing off their best moves for mums and dads.

Pet Day Bonanza!

On Friday 23rd March 2018, the Early Years classes eagerly welcomed some two-legged, four-legged, and no-legged friends! As an extension of the topic of study this term, Animals, it was a real treat to get to know some real life examples. There were several pets of the tail-wagging variety who were happy to be hugged and petted as much as our three and four-year old children could manage. There was the cutest budgie who went by the name of Jerry and is happiest when singing and preening in front of the mirror, then there was a fierce dragon lizard who wasn't really fierce at all, and even a rather large snake! How exciting!

Thank you so much to all the parents who brought their delightful animals into school. It really made our day!

Revelling in Rugby!

On Friday 9th March, St Lawrence College hosted a wonderful inter-school rugby event for 140 Junior children in years 5 & 6. St Catherine's and the Francoellenique School Eugene Delacroix, joined us for an exhilarating morning of  tag rugby in which small teams of children played against other schools and chased their opponents with guts and determination. As it was a 'friendly' rather than a tournament, no scores were recorded officially, but the children kept tabs on just how many tries they managed to score and how many opponents they stopped by pulling off their tags.

As well as families and friends, a number of visitors came along to attend this event including the head teachers of several Greek schools, the Headmistress of Delacroix School, teachers at the French Institute and members of the Greek Rugby Federation. Well done to the PE department for organising this thrilling event!
