Canteen

School lunches are an integral part of school life. Our own catering service prepares international-style food on site. The menus are regularly assessed by independent experts to ensure that our pupils enjoy nutritionally-balanced, healthy meals.

The menus are regularly updated to ensure that a fresh and healthy selection of food is available for the pupils. Vegetarians and children with special dietary requirements are also catered for.

In the Early Years and Junior School, the children’s lunchtime orders are dealt with on a daily basis at the start of the school day when registration is taken. At lunchtime, the children’s orders are sent to their classes.

In the senior school, a more informal arrangement stands whereby the pupils make their own arrangements for meal choices during either of the two breaks between sessions.

Top UK Educationalist’s visit to school inspires parents and teachers

Professor Barry Hymer, one of the UK’s top thinkers on education visited the school on Friday and worked with parents and teachers on how both those groups could best help support a child’s learning through meaningful feedback rather than empty praise.

Barry Hymer, who is Professor of Psychology in Education at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster, and who has studied learning theory for more than 30 years, started his day by presenting to well over one hundred of our parents. He challenged the parents to consider what time they give to discussing their child's work with their child and urged parents to always praise the effort rather than the ability of their children. After then working with a group of twenty educators and managers among the school staff, drawn from both the junior and senior school, Professor Hymer completed the day by talking to the entire teaching staff of St. Lawrence College. Exploring the research of growth mindsets as made famous by Dr Carol Dweck of Stanford University, Professor Hymer demonstrated to staff the impact a teacher can make on a child if they challenge the child to learn for intrinsic rather than extrinsic reward.

Parents and teachers were enthusiastic and fulsome in the reactions to the day. Many commented how motivating it was to listen to such an expert and how his insights would directly affect their interaction with their children and pupils. Headmaster Phil Holden commented “It is certainly our intention to host more such activities. Expert, high quality professional training is recognised as essential for all teachers, however long they have been in the profession. When it is as powerful and well-presented as this, it is inspirational as well as being of great use”.

In addition to Professor Hymer's work, a group of sixteen teachers also took part in a workshop presented by Ms Elizabeth Dawson, a trainer in Action Research. These teachers were trained in how to best utilise Action Research to make improvements to every day school practice by using teams of teachers to investigate a pre-determined theme before presenting their findings and recommendations to their colleagues.

All in all it was a very busy and highly productive day for the school!

Beyond the classroom

School would be a very dull place if all that ever happened there was classroom education.

At St. Lawrence College we recognise that learning can and does happen at all times and not just in the classroom. That’s why we encourage our pupils to develop interests and skills across the wide range of activities that are made available to them at lunchtimes and in the afternoons.

Activities available include extra sports activities such as swimming, football, basketball, volleyball, rugby and tennis and also drama, music, debate, forensics, Model United Nations, charity work, environmental work, chess, and even philosophy discussion.

Whether the activities a pupil chooses are competitive or not, whether they represent a new challenge or serve to strengthen a skill the pupil already possesses, they all help in the development of self-confidence, while providing an opportunity to make new friends across year groups and, above all, to have great fun!

...thousands of our pupils have gone on to study at some of the best universities in the world...

What we would like to do now, is to share your stories and these great achievements. Please help us to do that by completing the questionnaire below. We would love to be able to use these stories to share on our websites, in printed media, on our social media channels – and of course in our classrooms, when we talk to current pupils about where and what our alumni have gone on to do.

Uniform

Our pupils are our ambassadors and it is therefore essential that they convey the highest possible standards of behaviour and appearance.

All pupils attending St. Lawrence College, up to and including Year 11 must wear the prescribed school uniform when attending school, or when participating in a school-organised event outside normal school hours.

Our uniform policy and items succeed in:

  • promoting a sense of pride in the school and in the pupils’ personal appearance
  • engendering a sense of community and identifying pupils with the school
  • supporting positive behaviour and discipline
  • being comfortable, smart and practical for a day’s activities
  • being flexible enough to be suitable whatever the season or climate
  • preventing pupils from creating a distraction in class by coming to school in fashion-conscious clothing
  • making pupils feel equal to their peers in terms of appearance
  • taking into account health and safety
  • providing good value for money by specifying clothing that is hardwearing enough for any pupil’s day

The school shop operating within the administration building provides a wide variety of uniform clothing items, i.e. shorts, trousers, sports bottoms, T-shirts, polo shirts, jumpers, sweatshirts, fleeces or hoodies and more.

Please refer to our Junior and Senior school policies for more specifics.

Functions Workshop

The St. Lawrence College Workshop members meet once a week at lunchtime and engage, through discussion and activity, on a particular project. The Functions Workshop is open to all pupils in the senior school and is characterised by informal meetings as well as by its collaborative approach.

Teacher and pupils explore themes related to seasonal events and performances, through explicit instruction and cooperative strategy. Events may include Greek celebrations, Autumn Festival, Christmas Celebration/Play, Senior and Junior Drama Club plays. Pupils are given the opportunity to put into practice artistic skills of painting, drawing and 3D-construction and express themselves through open discussion.

Workshop activities are suitable for all abilities and year levels, as tasks are assigned according to the level of skills of every pupil, and teacher support is provided in order to scaffold learning through practical activities.

These activities include: brainstorming, painting scenery on large areas of canvas, signs, posters, construction of props, and the decoration of specific spaces related to seasonal events. The end products provide backstage support during specific performances.

The workshop develops a pupil’s ability to complete independent tasks, apply practical artistic skills, collaborate in problem solving through the creative process, meet deadlines and follow instructions, while also building a sense of belonging.

Drama at St. Lawrence College

At St. Lawrence College we recognise the power of drama as an educational tool for children of all ages.

Drama provokes imagination, exercises powers of expression and supports the emotional maturity of a child. Self-control, interpretation and teamwork are also among the many skills enhanced by the process of a successful drama production. Above all, drama at St. Lawrence College offers tremendous fun for pupils, creating an outlet for energy and both physical and cerebral creativity along the way.

The highly popular drama club in the Senior School works towards an annual production while taking time to explore theatrical and dramatic technique and practice throughout the year. A considerable number of pupils are encouraged to learn more about themselves through performance while others derive their sense of accomplishment by working backstage on props, lighting, sound and set design.

Recent productions, including Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot”, both performed in our purpose-built Cultural Hall, earned rave reviews. Most importantly, though, hundreds of pupils have matured thanks to those experiences and will never forget being a part of such memorable performances.

Come and join us!

English as an Additional Language (EAL) - Senior School

The EAL is a language support department for new pupils from all over the world, whose English needs to be brought up to the level required to follow classes in our British curriculum successfully. It offers a safe, nurturing, multinational environment that helps newcomers settle into the school programme and improve their English, so that they are adequately equipped to follow regular classes whatever their year group. The EAL department caters for pupils with English of any level from beginners to intermediate.

Depending on their level of English, new pupils start by spending up to 26 periods a week following an intensive English language course, which covers all skills – reading, writing, listening, speaking. These periods are gradually reduced and replaced by different subjects that are added to the pupil’s timetable as their level of English improves.

...offers a safe, nurturing, multinational environment...

As a basis for the intensive course, we use a well-tested course book, which is supplemented by extra vocabulary, grammar, speaking and discussion and other language-learning activities – anything goes, really, as long as it helps improve everyone’s English!

The department also has a lending library of graded readers, whose aim is to aid acquisition of language outside of school in an enjoyable way. Support in other subjects, such as History, Geography and Science, is also provided, especially in terms of vocabulary.

The EAL Department plays an important pastoral role, as its teachers are in a position to oversee the pupils’ progress in all areas and intervene when necessary, to ensure that every pupil is being encouraged, rather than discouraged, by the level of challenge they are exposed to.

The EAL department can also offer continued support in the form of “Extra English” whenever an additional language (French / Spanish / Chinese) is deemed an excessive demand for a pupil still trying to master English.

The St Lawrence College Art Club: Creativity and Fun!

The Art Club meets one lunchtime per week and is open to all pupils and to all levels of ability. The only thing required is enthusiasm! Much of what is created by the Art Club is exhibited around the school or at our annual, extremely popular, Art Exhibition.

Activities within the club allow its members to use of a wide range of materials and introduce pupils to a variety of artistic techniques and applications, such as mural painting, which go beyond what is taught during Art lessons. Moreover, club activities help promote pupils’ visual and historical awareness in Art and Design, while enhancing their confidence through the development of projects which require initiative. They also aim to encourage friendships and help pupils practise social skills, through working with children from different year groups. Above all, the club encourages creativity both individually and also through group projects.

When the club meets, Art teachers are always on hand to help pupils who want to further develop their natural talent as well as to those who need more guidance on improving practical skills. They build on the skills already taught during lessons and help children to improve their knowledge and understanding of the subject.

The Art Club offers A-Level Art and Design pupils an opportunity to show their appreciation of the subject through the organisation of small seminars or presentations based on a topic of their choice, which they prepare themselves. It also gives those pupils who have not chosen Art in Key Stage 4 an opportunity to continue to stay in touch with the subject and exercise their creativity in a safe and nurturing environment.

The Club is informal, fun, therapeutic and instructive in its style and content, while practically contributing to our school environment by creating and displaying work which can be enjoyed by pupils, staff and visitors alike.

The Services Society

St. Lawrence College has a proud tradition of helping the community through its Services Society which meets on a regular basis, throughout the school term, during break and lunch times, as well as when the need arises for immediate action. It organizes a variety of fundraising and charity events for the Children’s Village SOS in Vari, the Soup Kitchen in Anavyssos, as well as for various humanitarian crises that come up over the year. The Society regularly visits charity organisations in order to gain hands-on experience and understanding of how they function and respond to crises.

Helping one life at a time

The Society was created with the objective of developing initiative and leadership, providing pupils with the experience of working closely together to achieve a common goal and, above all, preparing them for useful citizenship by instilling in our pupils a sense of duty and volunteer spirit. Members of our Services Society learn about the principles of good citizenship and are encouraged to take an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of their community. They are provided with role models of service-minded people who contribute to the community without personal financial reward, and promote high ethical standards in both public and private endeavours.

Last but not least, pupils who get actively involved in the St. Lawrence College Services Society develop compassion, patience, strategic and organisational skills, while also honing their leadership qualities.

Senior School Celebrate Οχι Day

On Wednesday 28th October, the Greek national day was celebrated with pride in St Lawrence College. The day commemorates the rejection, during the Second World War of an ultimatum made by Benito Mussolini to allow Axis forces to enter Greece. The day was celebrated with a play presented by pupils of Years 7 & 9. The play was a dramatized adaptation of a part of the Alki Zei’s novel Petros’ War on the topic of the beginning of the war and the changes in people’s lives. Sixth Form pupils read texts narrating these first days of the war and letters by soldiers. Finally, songs were performed by the school Greek Choir.

The celebrations proved a memorable reminder of the sacrifices made by others to ensure freedom in Greece. Congratulations to all students who took part.
