Beyond the Classroom - Junior

Extra-curricular clubs are a great way to make new friends, get fit or learn new skills in a safe environment. You can find a whole range of clubs available at St. Lawrence College -from infant yoga to chess.

We offer both Daytime Clubs during lunchtime/school hours, and Afternoon Clubs from 3:30 – 4:30pm, to children from Foundation Stage 1 up to Year 6.These cover a wide array of activities that make full use of our outstanding facilities, including a 25-metre outdoor heated swimming pool, outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor artificial pitch, as well as a four-court sports hall for indoor sports, such as basketball and volleyball.

Team sports
Many of our clubs promote team building and physical activity through indoor and outdoor sports, such as football, rugby, tennis, basketball, yoga, karate, rhythmics, and more. We are fortunate to have professional coaches who use their expertise to provide high quality coaching to all participating pupils.

Swimming
Swimming is a life-saving skill and can also be the beginning of many enjoyable water experiences. At St. Lawrence College, we offer afternoon swimming lessons to pupils from 2 ½ to 18 years of age, taught by friendly, caring and fully qualified instructors. Structured, planned lessons cater for all abilities, from water confidence classes right through to advanced club swimming.

Music
At St. Lawrence we believe that music is a creative and social art to be enjoyed by all and we are proud to be offering to our children the opportunity to enjoy musical experiences in our After-school Music School and Orchestra.

The Music School offers instrumental tuition in piano, violin, guitar and flute and provides children with the chance to prepare for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music Examinations.

The Orchestra is great opportunity for budding musicians to display their ability by rehearsing once a week and practising along with other musicians for school concerts.

Other clubs
Other club activities provided throughout the year include the Junior School Choirs, Greek Drama/Dance for National holiday celebrations, Eco-council, Chess and Art Club.

Practical details
At the end of the summer term, families receive letters with all the available choices for both Daytime and Afternoon Clubs to be offered the following academic year. Included in the letter is the intended age group and the cost, if any, of each club.

The timetable/daily programme is drawn up in a way that provides children with varying and engaging activities throughout the year.

Most clubs (e.g. football/drama) are very popular and as a result they may have a waiting list. It’s important to register sooner rather than later, since all places are subject to availability.

An after-school activities shuttle bus service is available, with several drop off points, for those pupils who cannot be picked up directly from school by their parent/guardian.

From Challenges to….Olympiads!

During the 2024–2025 academic year, 85 of our pupils proudly participated in Mathematics Challenges organised by the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT).

While only 50% of participants worldwide receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate—awarded in a ratio of 3:2:1—our pupils achieved significantly above this average.

• 70% of our Year 12 and 13 participants were awarded a certificate

• 85% of our Year 9, 10, and 11 participants earned a certificate

• 64% of our Year 7 and 8 participants received recognition

We are incredibly proud of the dedication, effort, and mathematical talent shown by all our pupils.

Special congratulations go to our three pupils who have qualified to take part in the Junior Mathematical Olympiad on June 10th. This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we wish our young mathematicians the very best of luck!

The pupils aged from five years old in Reception class right up to 11 year old in year 6, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to play fun games and have a picnic and an ice cream. The Junior Duke programme is a scheme in which pupils complete a journal filled with challenges that are done at home with families or independently. The tasks range from domestic challenges to cookery to learning about countries related to them. MUN and YMGE Participation and success

Our school’s MUN Club had a busy time this term.

During the weekend of 18th - 19th February fifteen members of the MUN Club of our school participated in the second St. Catherine’s School Model United Nations event.

In this innovative simulation of the United Nations, delegates had the opportunity to discuss matters of international importance, enhance their understanding of UN-committee procedures and simultaneously prepare themselves for MUN conferences designed for pupils at the secondary level of their education. The theme for this year’s Conference was “Proliferating education and gender equity”.

This time our participants were from year groups ranging from Year 8 to Year 12, with many younger pupils participating for the first time in an MUN Conference and despite sacrificing a whole weekend they all enjoyed their first experience and are very excited about future participations.

Kimberly Wang held the position of the co-chair of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Committee and made an excellent impression with her hard work and kind attitude towards everyone.

The next exciting endeavour of our MUN Club was the participation of three dedicated members in the prestigious Yale Model Government Europe, YMGE, from Thursday 16th until Saturday 18th March 2023, in a conference which was highly demanding, not only academically, but physically as well, as it required hard work for long hours across all three days.

This interesting simulation of the work of United Nations is one of a kind. It is the only conference in the world with its globally unique committee and conference structure, where high-school pupils from around the world come together to debate events of global importance and put their creativity, diplomacy, and problem-solving abilities to the test. Delegates learn how to actively search for compromises and agreement, while having crisis updates thrown at them every step of the way. They embody a diversity of perspectives and help the participants gain valuable knowledge of regional politics in various areas of the world. And that was exactly what made it interesting as our pupils commented, that it was spontaneous, and therefore challenging and fun at the same time.

Many schools from around the world took part in YMGE Conference and it was a great honour for our school that Kimberly Wang was the only participant from schools in Greece who was awarded with the Best Delegate prize for her Committee.

Well done to all the members of our MUN Club, for their hard work and dedication which bodes well for the future!

28th October 1940 anniversary celebration

On Thursday 20th October St. Lawrence College celebrated the 28th October anniversary.

Every year we honour those who gave their lives for the freedom of Greece. We admire the strength and mental fortitude of those who dared to oppose the legendary "OXI" against the fascists who tried to conquer our country. The Greeks shouted a loud "No" in those days of the 40's, which was admirable when the whole of Europe was at a standstill.

All our pupils from Year 4 to Year 6 participated in the celebration, where they narrated the most important events of that historical period, recited poems and sang songs.

We are all excited that after two years of lockdown we were able to celebrate with our pupils this Greek National holiday.

Interhouse Quiz Finals

At the end of the Spring term, the Junior School held their annual Interhouse Quiz Finals between Attica, Epirus and Macedonia. The four finalists from each KS2 team were super excited to represent their Houses and turned up ready to bring their best effort to the occasion, having succeeded in getting through the earlier rounds and semi-finals. Questions in three categories: spelling, mental maths and general knowledge proved challenging but worth the brain strain as each child chewed over possibilities or sometimes confidently shot out their answers. The competitions were hard fought!

Congratulations to all who tried and particularly to those who succeeded in gaining victory for their teams!

Year 3 winners: Attica

Year 4 winners: Macedonia

Year 5 winners: Epirus

British Physics Olympiad

On Friday March 12th, the Senior School Physics department took part in the British Physics Olympiad’s Intermediate Physics Challenge for Year 11; a UK national competition. In this competition, high achieving students of Physics are encouraged to participate with the key aim of trying out questions that make them think more deeply. Unlike previous years, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s competition consisted of two multiple choice question papers and took place entirely online.

Despite the short notice and the great deal of pressure they are under, 14 of our Year 11 pupils embraced the challenge and made a huge success out of it, winning 6 Gold awards, 7 Silvers and 1 Bronze. It is worth pointing out that Gold was awarded to only 865 out of a total of 4,710 pupils (18.4%) amongst 204 schools who participated in the competition.

Our pupils filled us with pride and we wish to share with you and celebrate their success!
