Empower me!
Ms Tsatsouli's year 2 class assembly this year was called “Empower me!”
The message was clear: when you educate children and believe in them, you empower them to go after their dreams. Isn't that the key to a good education? Isn't that what learning should be all about?
The children spoke about their dreams, their wishes and desires of things they ought to learn at school and they shared their Cobis competition video entries too. Thank you 2T for a sweet lesson in how to believe in yourself and reach for those goals.
The Three Rs are Fun!
"There is no such thing as 'away'; when we throw anything away it must go somewhere," said Annie Leonard. How true!
On Friday, 19th May 2017, Ms Kokkalis' year 3 class gave KS2, teachers, families and friends a most valuable lesson in an eye-catching manner. The 3 R's: Recycling, Reducing & Re-using were shown to us with skill and sensitivity as the children reminded us all how important it is to take care of the environment by not wasting our world's precious resources.
In addition, to make sure we were all paying close attention, this class then took the unusual step of challenging us all to a dance off - and boy did we all have the moves like Jagger! It was a seriously fun way to end the week and send everyone home with a smile and a spring in their step for the weekend. Bravo Year 3!
St Lawrence Art Exhibition 2017
We are very excited to announce the opening of the 2017 Art Exhibition of St. Lawrence College senior school later this month.
The exhibition is our opportunity to showcase the varied work produced by our students, mostly based around our chosen theme for this year, which is ‘Contrasts’. Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils have produced wonderful art work both individually and collaboratively. Their projects aim to demonstrate a celebration of Art elements in an expressive and imaginative way.
There will also be a chance to view our Art & Design A-Level coursework. This is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the talents of our senior pupils. Their portfolios are of exceptional standard both in their control and use of media as well as in the development of personal ideas and themes.
Finally, you can enjoy the results of our photography competition, which was held recently in the school. Pupils and teachers were encouraged to submit their favourite photograph of 2016/1017, again on the theme ‘Contrasts’.
You can visit the exhibition in the Exhibition Centre, the building immediately in front of the administration block, from Monday 15th May until Friday 26th May during school hours. You will also have an opportunity to view this during the hours of our parent/teacher meeting held on Monday 22nd May.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Being Different Yet United
The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people. This holds true no matter where you look around you, and the significance of the idea it portrays was illustrated with care and vitality by the children of Ms Gkogkou's year 5 class on Friday 31st March in their annual class assembly.
With a thoughtful look at how we are all seem to be so different in our ways according to our cultural norms, the children showed us how similar we really are. They gently reminded us how insignificant our differences are when we look at the bigger picture. Does it matter whether we greet people with a kiss, a hug or a shake of the hand? No, of course not. What really counts is how well we cooperate and get along - seeing our similarities and finding common ground.
Bravo Year 5 on a super assembly.
Independence Day
Greek Independence Day, 25th March, was celebrated with a fanfare this year in the St Lawrence Junior School. A short play was sweetly performed by the hard-working pupils of Years 5 & 6 in colourful costumes. The theme of the play was the beginning of the Greek Revolution in the Aegean islands.
Our pupils presented scenes from everyday life of the early 19th century and showed how these islands collaborated to rebel against the Ottoman Empire. Traditional songs and folk dances were skilfully performed by Junior School pupils. The play was written by our very talented Ms Tsirigoti, and she was assisted with the organisation of the whole production by her colleague, Ms Sapountzaki. Well done to all - what a successful celebration it was!
Uniquely Me!
Ms Maniatis' year 6 class showed us exactly how important it is to be yourself in an amazingly vibrant assembly on Friday 17th March. The children took over the stage and gave us wonderful examples of their uniqueness and some of their special skills. Avra played the violin beautifully, Costas had the younger children oohing and aahing with his keepie-uppie talents, Clio and Despina cartwheeled around the stage in tandem and Gonzalo did some cool breakdancing too.
With a singalong to 'Can't Stop the Feeling' to round off the show, everyone loudly applauded and cheered the truly individual style of this Year 6 class. What a great way to end the week!
Science Fair Extravaganza!
"I predict success" they said, and boy were they right! Friday 10th March was an amazingly experimental day at St Lawrence as the children of KS2 (years 3 - 6) brought their best selves to school to put on a science fair of superb quality and first rate effort.
Having prepared their projects at home with friends and family also involved in the fun, they showcased their learning with an eye-catching array of displays all about the subjects they'd chosen to explore and exhibit. Every topic imaginable was there to see, from foaming chemical reactions, to coloured flower petals, erupting volcanoes, intoxicated plants, to studies of the brain and human reactions to certain stimuli. The Senior School science teachers who were judging the entries really had their work cut out for them in choosing winners for each year group.
So what was the conclusion? That it was an amazing and inspiring day for all! Well done to those children who participated.
SLC website wins an award!
St. Lawrence College’s brand new website has been acknowledged as outstanding and has won an award at the prestigious WebX Awards! The WebX Awards is an annual event recognising achievement in the web design industry. Each year the very best Greek websites are chosen in various categories for their style, functionality and innovation.
Our school’s new website now offers easy access while highlighting all the features that make St. Lawrence College so special. This is exactly what we aimed for when the need for a new website was first mooted last year. The talented team of Wedia worked in collaboration with the school, and managed to capture and convey St. Lawrence College’s ethos and educational commitment with a modern and inviting approach.
Recognition has now followed, and the www.slc.gr website has won the 'Silver WebX Award 2017’ in the category of ‘Best of Web Presence – Education’ (incidentally, there isn’t a golden award in the specific category!) . A massive congratulations to all involved in making this happen.
Forgiveness is a Virtue of the Brave
On Thursday 23rd February, Ms Veroutsos' Year 3 class held an assembly all about forgiveness in which the children showed us what it means to truly forgive others. Through a series of scenes, the children explained how important it is to say sorry to others and to be able to accept the apology so you can move on.
"When you hold on to your anger with someone, you give that person the power to control you," the children explained. Well there's a lesson no one should forget! With the most enthusiastic rendition of the pop song, 'Sorry' to round off the assembly, we all heard the class loud and clear! Good job Year 3!
We're all Friends
On Thursday 23rd February 2017, KS1 classes were treated to a super assembly by Ms Tapankidis' Year 2 class. 'Playing and Learning Together' was the topic of their class assembly.
The pupils sang three of their favourite PSHE songs packed full of meaning: Playground Blues, The Colours of Friendship and Learning Together. The songs were combined with short skits to remind youngsters how to make certain no one is left out during playtime.
"We're all different but we're all special!" was the message to all. Children have to find a way to celebrate their differences and help each other learn both in the playground and in the classroom. They use their individual skills and talents, developing them all the time. Heartfelt singing and acting was enjoyed by parents, pupils and staff. Congratulations Year 2 on a job well done!
Olive Oil Festival
As well as studying the Greek language, the Greek department knows how to take learning and drama outdoors. On Thursday 15th December, they took Year 5 pupils into our olive grove to pick olives and picnic in a most traditional manner. The children learned what it meant to farm the land and produce one of our staple food products.
Then on Monday 19th December, a well-known children’s writer Maria Klini, came along to read her children’s novel to Year 5 in the Junior School library. Her story, called Ο Λαίμαργος Αγιος Βασίλης (Greedy Father Christmas), kept the children entertained as well as providing an opportunity to learn about writing as a career. In addition, there was an enlightening discussion about the spirit of giving and the true meaning of Christmas.
Well done for giving the pupils a chance to experience so much more than usual!

What's your Christmas Like?
Christmas is celebrated all around the world – but Christmas traditions and names for 'Father Christmas' vary in many ways!
In keeping with the theme of celebrating differences, this was the message that came out loud and clear by Ms Grivas’ Year 2 class. The pupils did an amazing job of informing us about how Christmas is celebrated in the different countries they or their parents come from; from far off and sunny Australia and Nigeria, to the Philippines, to cold cold Russia...but not only... Let’s not forget Canada, home of Santa Claus! A catchy song with Rudolph 'leading the way' ended this seasonal, information-packed assembly.
Congratulations to Ms Grivas and her Year 2 class on their super work.
Celebrations Around the World!
On Friday 2nd December, Year 4 treated us to an assembly all about different religious celebrations that are held in all corners of the world. They took a look at Diwali, Hannukah, Ramadan, Buddist New Year and Christmas which is right around the corner! They talked, sang and danced their way through an entertaining show that expressed the meaning of joy, caring, kindness and consideration which is at the core of so many festivals like these.
Bravo to 4b on sharing your joyful ideas with us!
Our Words
On Friday 18th November 2016, 6R kicked off the year of class assemblies with a refreshing look at how what we say affects everyone else. Your gallery with be rendered here"Our Words" played several scenes around how we show respect - or don't - to our parents; how gossips can make others' lives a misery with Tabitha Talkalot tormenting the villagers; and how Aesop's tale of 'Food for Thought' taught everyone the real meaning of tongues and the good, or bad, they can do. Bravo Year 6 on a seriously entertaining topic!
