Baking Fun!
December is always a fun time at school and this month has been no exception. Our youngest cuties in Early Years classes have been baking all kinds of Christmas goodies to take home for their families, including cookies and cupcakes with chocolate, sprinkles and sweetness galore!
Just looking at the concentration on their faces is enough to melt the heart, and listening to their chatter as they cook happily under the guidance of their caring teachers brings a smile to your face too. What a day!
Back to Live Sports
After nearly two years, our school teams are back in action. On Thursday 11th November, our school hosted a friendly game against ACS and on Friday 12th November, we switched location as our girls' over 16 football team travelled to Agia Paraskevi to play against ACS.
While our focus would usually be on results, the most important thing at the moment is to be back out on the pitch and playing, and we can't wait for more upcoming events to take part in.
Our next game will be on Tuesday 23rd November at St. Catherine's school with Boys Over 16 football.
It's great to be back!
International Debating Success
Last Saturday our younger debaters took part online in the University of Edinburgh Junior Debate Competition. The tournament was for debaters in Years 10 and below and included teams from around the UK and Europe. All of our debaters had a great day and learnt a huge amount from some experienced university debaters who judges their rounds. Once again, Theodora Farmakidi and Constantinos Zafeirakis excelled, this time finishing in 5th place overall after winning the ‘Silver final’ which was a playoff between the teams ranked 5th to 8th after the qualifying rounds. Their prize is 50 Pounds that will be donated to a charity of their choice. Congratulations to them and all the debaters who took part.
First Lego League 2021
The annual First Lego League Robotics competition took place at the end of May with a slight twist. Teams from around Greece took part in a 'remote', online competition, broadcasting their robots in action from their homes and schools. St Lawrence College's new robotics team was there solving challenges, presenting ideas and impressing the judges with their hard work and dedication. We look forward to next year's live in-person competition and can't wait to get started on a whole new set of challenges to solve.
Reading Champs!
This year the whole junior school has been full of avid readers who have taken on the Reading Challenge with great gusto and a keen desire to reach their goals. With every milestone marked by the award of a badge, there has been much to celebrate. Maria, Bateer, Athina and Olivia achieved the outstanding target of becoming Diamond Readers with a phenomenal total of books read, discussed and described in a variety of ways. Amazing accomplishments worthy of celebration!

Fun in the Sun
Lessons don’t have to be done indoors all day long, do they? Certainly not! Year 6 had some fun with water art on Friday, 28th May 2021 when they learned how to use a pendulum to create patterns on the ground and even drew their own designs. How big can a canvas be? The size of a playground it seems!
Computing
It’s June 2021 and all is going well at St Lawrence College! It’s wonderful now that we’re back in school after online learning for the spring, that we can give the children the opportunity once more to engage in our exciting computing lessons with all the extras! The pupils of year 5 have been quite excited with their coding lessons as they have learned to program the BBC micro:bit to do many different things from displaying a flashing heart to playing a game of Rock Paper Scissors!
Summer School 2021

Mini Adventures!
The little ones in Early Years are learning about ‘people who help us’ so took a close-up look at firefighters. The teachers took them around the school to look for fire extinguishers and identify school’s safety features. Following this, the children painted their own fire-red pictures with their hands and finally relaxed with a garden picnic in the shade. This third term since our return to school has been packed with fun!
More Lockdown Debating
In the past month, St. Lawrence debaters have taken part in two online competitions. Two weeks ago, some of our senior debaters pitted their wits against the best in Greece at the Cambridge University Athens Schools Competition, and last weekend, 12 of our younger orators entered the International Competition for Young Debaters (ICYD), which was also organised this year by Cambridge University. All of them performed well in tough debates and received some valuable feedback from some experienced judges. Special mention to Kristian Narcessian who finished amongst the top 10 individual speakers in the ICYD competition. Also, many thanks to the teachers and ex-pupils who gave up time on the weekends to help judge.
Book Character Day
On Friday 29th January, 'Book Character Day' was held here in our Early Years section of the Junior School. Our littlest pupils looked their cutest as they dressed up in some imaginative costumes for a fun Friday at school! They chose a range of their favourite story characters to represent including Little Red Riding Hood and even the Big bad Wolf! By bringing their favourite story to school, they were able to share the enjoyment with their classmates and teachers. What a lovely day!
House Captains
Despite this year's changes, selection of the 2020-2021 the St Lawrence College House Captains is complete and we're delighted to have some extremely hardworking, determined and mature young people representing the PE department. Being a House Captain is an extremely important role in our community and once again our pupils will be working diligently to organise events, support charities and take part in some of our extremely succesful sports teams. Take a look at the pictures below to meet our new House Captains, find out what they'll be up to, and see what you'll need to take on the role in the future.
Another Online MUN Participation for St Lawrence College Pupils
During the weekend Friday 11th to Sunday 13th December, fourteen pupils from St. Lawrence College participated in the Costeas-Geitonas MUN Conference, following a long tradition of pupils from our school taking part in this event which is held every December. This year’s Conference was held online and, despite the challenges, our pupils were as excited as ever and participated with enthusiasm, dedication and commitment. Everyone is very proud of them, especially their teachers and their parents, as they sacrificed much free time preparing for the event as well as participating for long hours over the weekend, discussing important international issues with their fellow delegates from other schools. And they are already discussing their participation to the next MUN Conference! A special mention needs to be made of Eleni Kalendi, Joanna Sakkadas and Christina Beykou who held Chairing positions in the Legal Committee, the Environmental Commission and the International Court of Justice; positions of great responsibility and ones that required extra work from them even during the summer. And they held those positions like true ladies! This event seemed to prove once again that young people are the only hope we have for a better future!
28th October Celebrations
The Greek National Holiday to commemorate 28th October 1940 was celebrated before the half term break at St Lawrence College Junior School in a socially distanced manner for the first time. The classes of Year 6, which usually head up our performances, took part in a History Quiz based on all their learning about OXI Day and the significance of the Greek resistance. Through the quiz, the pupils learned about the main events of World War II in Greece and the battle of Democracy against Fascism. Despite the masks and the absence of a parental audience, the children enjoyed the experience.
Time for Mathematics Awards!
Our pupils received very proudly their awards for the Intermediate and Junior Mathematics Challenges that took place during the academic year 2019-2020! We are very proud not only for the pupils who were awarded a certificate but for all the pupils who participated in both challenges. The results of the Junior Mathematics Challenge can be found below while the results of the Intermediate Maths challenge can be found here.
In the meantime, our senior mathematicians have started their preparation for the Senior Mathematics Challenge that will take place online the week beginning 2nd November. It is the first time our school will be participating in the Senior Mathematics Challenge. We wish them the very best of luck and we are looking forward to seeing our younger mathematicians again at the E = mc2 lunchtime club to learn and be prepared for new challenges!
